Reference to Original Media

The song that we have chosen to create our music video to, Piledriver Waltz by Alex Turner, was specifically recorded for the film Submarine, directed by Richard Ayoade. The main character in the film, played by actor Craig Roberts, is called Oliver Tate. This ties in well with our own artist, who similarly is called Oliver Quad, creating a stronger link between the film and our music video. This will also help with our target audience, as they are more likely to watch films such as Submarine, and will consequently understand the link between the song, our artist and the film.

  1. the name thing isn't an intertextual reference. an intertextual reference would be a character in your video wearing a red duffle coat.

  2. Evening Liana. I agree with Mr Ford, what you have is a coincidence rather than an intertextual reference.

In terms of intertextual references look at Alex Turner's work with The Last Shadow Puppets and then obviously Scott Walker who both Alex and Miles Kane cited as a major influence (you'll know 'The Sun Aint Gonna Shine Any More'). Scott Walker's early songs were quite dark (listen to 30th Century Man) even though he was thought of as quite a pop pin up. Also look into John Cooper Clarke who has been a major influence on Turner's lyrics.
